Dick DeVos – Businessman and Philathropist

Dick DeVos was at the very top of Amway as its CEO. He has also received an appointment to a top panel that oversees the Federal Aviation Administration. Additional leadership roles include Founder and President of Windquest Group. He is also the Co-Chair of the Michigan Grand Action committee.


Dick DeVos is one of seven members tasked with charting the strategic direction of the FAA. Appointees, like Dick DeVos, serve in a volunteer capacity for three years. The group meets quarterly. FAA leadership feels that Dick DeVos will be a major asset. Dick DeVos is an aviation geek and pilot. He was responsible for bringing Southwest Airlines to Grand Rapids. He chose a business approach that flew under the radar of the public and media.


Dick and Betsy DeVos have spent their adult lives working to change policies and institutions. They are both GOP mega donors. Their support and political influence have helped to shape and change Michigan laws and policies that affect labor and education. Both husband and wife successfully pushed for charter school expansions. In 2012, Dick DeVos inspired the laws that changed Michigan into a right-to-work state. As such, membership in a union is no longer an employment condition in the state.


School vouchers and creating charter schools are ongoing projects for Dick and Betsy DeVos. The influence of Dick DeVos and his family goes way beyond the boundaries of politics. The DeVos family has reportedly given away close to $140 million toward leadership programs, culture, and the arts. Add human services, support for churches, and educational initiatives to the list.


Dick DeVos also made a $12.5 million dollar contribution in 2000 toward the construction of a children’s hospital named after his mother. He ran for governor six years later. Dick DeVos is a busy man, and involves himself in numerous projects. Position and power can get a lot of things done in life. The DeVos family takes on a project and never gives up. Their efforts to support charter schools have spilled over to 24 states. Dick DeVos is on the move, and is a political and social force.
