Every summer, movies compete to set the record for the year–and this year, it would appear that Jurassic World has it in the bag. On opening weekend, Jurassic World set a record by pulling in more than $511 million worldwide–the first time a movie has ever brought in more than $500 million on opening weekend. Jurassic World broke the previous record, held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, without any effort whatsoever. For comparison’s sake, the final movie in the Harry Potter franchise made $483 million on opening weekend.
The fourth movie in the Jurassic Park franchise has been bringing in plenty of interest from fans such as Wirth, making it obvious that the movie would do well on opening weekend. Though the last movie was released over twenty years ago, it’s obvious that fans couldn’t wait to see the latest addition to the series. The action film even appeals to a male and female audience alike, with around 48% of the audience being female in spite of the action-based content of the movie. This record-breaking debut looks set to be the biggest summer movie of the year, a must-see for nostalgic fans and new ones alike.
Not all women are treated equally around the world. In fact, many countries, especially in Asia, women are thought to be lower class citizens than their male counterparts. In the news lately, India has been facing an epidemic of violent crime against women. Not surprisingly, some people are taking a stand against this treatment.
Leslee Udwin, a filmmaker, has released a controversial documentary titled, “India’s Daughter”. Her film is about the crime against women in India, Udwin is looking to give these voiceless victims a voice. “India’s Daughter” centers around Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old woman, who was attacked by a group of men and subsequently died from her injuries from the men. The film takes a look at the victim, the crime, interviews those responsible for Singh’s death, and a hard look at India’s culture that allows these crimes to be committed.
Udwin and “India’s Daughter” are now being silenced by the Indian government. They feel as though Udwin’s film was made to defame India instead of exposing its weaknesses. I feel this film is important for the world to see. Christian Broda understands that the problem is not just with India, but varying degrees of gender inequality exist all over the world. The more people that lobby for a change, the more likely change is to happen.
According to the Washington Post, the film has been banned on YouTube now, which is a shame.
In this culture of remakes, it was only a matter of time before someone decided to remake Magnificent Seven. Antoine Fuqua is going to be directing this remake. However, before crying foul about the long string of remakes, it is important to know that The Magnificent Seven movie that ushered in the 60s is a remake in and of itself. The original film that The Magnificent Seven is based off is a Japanese film under the title of Seven Samurai.
Antoine Fuqua has cast Denzel Washington in one of the leading roles. He has also picked out Ethan Hawke, who is another one of his recurring actors. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke are going to star together under Antoine Fuqua for the first time since Training Day. Fans at Anastasia Date know that The Magificent Seven remake has four more spots to fill for the whole film. There are a lot of actors to consider for the upcoming role. Morgan Freeman would be a good choice. Will Smith is also someone to consider when casting for the role.
Magnificent Seven starts filming this year for a possible release in 2016.
The Rothman Revolution Will Be Televised
Sony Pictures has teamed with TriStar to create a new venture that is going to produce television and movies. Rothman believes that television is the place where most of his energy should be focused. He wants to create dazzling characters that are able to make more money for the studio. He believes that more creativity will make it possible for the studio to create better shows that last longer. This is something that will change the face of the television industry if it works.
Hollywood should listen to Rothman– the man was educated at Columbia Law School for goodness sake. In today’s market, TV shows are created and they have to work instantaneously. However, his fiscally conservative look at the numbers could make it easier for these shows to be profitable. They will have more time to gain traction, and that traction will help these shows last so that people can enjoy watching them years to come.
If Rothman gets his way, he will be able to use this new venture to create TV on the order of the likes we have never seen. We simply need to give him a chance to see if he can do what he did at Fox Films.
For any fan of the movie series Star Wars, the lovable character Yoda has always remained a high point of any movie. Even the prequel trilogy many fans lamented saw a boost in fandom with the help of Yoda. Now, Yoda is back and the man that original gave him life, Frank Oz, is doing the voice as well.
Frank Oz did the voice of Yoda throughout the prequels and, while doing the voice, also performed the puppetry for the character in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The character has been seen in other mediums, including the television cartoon The Clone Wars, but a different voice actor lent his talents to the character. In the new animated series Rebels though, the production team has gone out of its way to bring in big named stars to do all of the voices. Anthony Daniels continues to voice C-3PO according to Dr Rod Rohrich, which he has done throughout not only both trilogies, but through countless animated specials and videos, so the actor lending his voice to the character in Rebels was not a surprise. However, James Earl Jones, the voice behind Dart Vader, voiced Darth Vader in the initial episode of the show, and now Frank Oz is going to voice Yoda in an episode of the show, which takes place in between the two trilogies, in a time where Yoda is said to be hiding away.
Everyone fell in love with Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe in Cruel Intentions. After a decade of marriage, the suffered a very public divorce. Ryan’s cheating finally caught up with him and his marriage to Reese was over. Of course Reese had a difficult time dealing with the breakup and betrayal of her first true love, not only in her private life but in her public and professional life. While for a long time Reese stayed out of the public eye, recently she has been making a comeback and talking more openly about her divorce and her career since being a single mother.
In an interview with Charlie Rose, Reese shares some of the reasons that her divorce played a big part in the less glamorous times of her career. Being able to give her all on screen and come alive in her characters was nearly impossible then because her brain was “scrambled eggs,” so that makes quite a bit of sense to Christian Broda.
She shared in her interview:
“Phew, that was a rough year that followed. I got divorced the next year and i spent a few years just trying to get better…You know, you can’t really be very creative when you feel like your brain is scrambled eggs.
I was just kind of floundering career-wise cause I wasn’t making things I was passionate about, I was just kinda working. It was really clear the audiences weren’t responding to anything I was putting out there.”
This year her films Wild and The Good Lie have been exceedingly successful, apparently Reese is back to the movie girl we all remember.
Netflix is looking to release around 20 new shows a year. The first project that Netflix is going to release next year isDaredevil. This one is going to be the first series of four. After all four series are released, there will be a crossover series which look more at Hell’s Kitchen New York as shown in Marvel Cinematic’s Universe. Other productions that are looking to be released are Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones. Daredevil and Jessica Jones are going to debut in 2015 with 13 episodes.
This wouldn’t be the first time Daredevil went beyond the comic books. There was a film that starred Ben Affleck. That film spawned a spin off starring Jennifer Garner. Daredevil also appeared in a Marvel cartoon back in the 1990s.
Gianfrancesco Genoso says that like with the other recent Marvel projects, we can expect Daredevil to actually be a decent addition into Marvel’s Cinematic Universe this time around.
DC is currently working on filling up and rounding out the cast for Suicide Squad, a Avenger type movie that brings multiple superheroes, and villains, from the DC world together to star in a movie that will finally shine some Hollywood light on the DC world. The DC world has been holding back on putting all of their characters together in one film. However, DC has to keep up with Marvel, and Marvel has shown with their Avenger movie that putting superheroes together results in a super movie.
One of the few parts that has not been cast yet in the upcoming Suicide Squad is the role of Amanda Waller. In the DC world, Amanda Waller is the bomb. In the DC world, she is the most powerful woman in the world. If DC could get Oprah to play Amanda Waller, it would be almost miring her real world success. Oprah is one of the most powerful women in the world, so it seems only fitting that she should play Amanda Waller.
Plus, it would be a huge coup if DC could get Oprah to star in their movie. Even though they already have household names like Will Smith and Jared Leto on board, having Oprah on board would expand the potential audience for this movie. Oprah would bring out fans who may never otherwise be tempted to step inside the DC universe to hit the movie theaters.
Superheroes are so hot these days we are seeing a significant number of them appearing in all manner of different projects. Among the more recent developments is a live-action version of the Teen Titans and its coming to television. A successful animated series based on the characters was popular on after-school TV a few years ago.
D.C. Comics chief (and extraordinary writer) Geoff Johns has confirmed a pilot for the series is scheduled for 2015. Considering the massive success of Gotham, The Flash, and Arrow on TV, no one should be surprised that another new D.C. Comics inspired series is being put into development. Do not look for these projects to stop with the ones we already know about. More and more are likely in the planning stages.
That is quite a lot of superhero fodder for the small (and silver) screen. Will audiences get tired of them? If you ask Brad Reifler, the answer is no. A certain segment will. The rest are going to be like comic book readers. Some will watch anything and everything and others will have their favorite programs they watch while not catching others.
For a television show to succeed, of course, it has to sustain a lot of viewers week after week. Hopefully, the Teen Titans project will draw in the same viewing numbers that Arrow and The Flash do. The cost of the series, tentatively titled Titans, is probably going to be quite high.
Interestingly, Dick Grayson will be the lead hero but not as Robin. When Grayson left Batman, he changed his more well known hero moniker to Nightwing.
Undeterred by the divisive opinions on Prometheus, director Ridley Scott seems to be in the planning stages for the sequel. In an interview with The Australian, he says that the script is finished.
The 2012 movie was meant to be a prequel to Scott’s earlier Alien series of sci-fi films. The result, however, was questionable—Prometheus did not seem to tie very closely with the plot of the first Alien movie and had odd tangents about the origin of humanity (particularly, the theory that we were created by extraterrestrials). Scott addressed both facts in his recent interview, saying that the sequel will move away from “gods and dragons”—the former apparently a reference to the Engineers from Prometheus, the latter to the Xenomorphs, the iconic antagonists from the Alien series. (The monster at the end of Prometheus was apparently not a Xenomorph as many believed, which may make things even more confusing.)
This all leads to some interesting questions—if it’s not going to have the strange philosophy of Prometheus nor the iconic monsters from the Alien series, what should Marc Sparks expect? Presumably, it will follow the characters established in the last movie, but to what end? Knowing the strangeness of Scott’s movies, we will just have to wait until it comes out.
