Getting into coaching at the major college basketball level is very difficult and competitive. This is even truer for younger people that do not have a lot of experience playing basketball. While getting into coaching at high level is challenging, one current coach has beaten the odds and is now considered one of the top coaches in the country.

Today, one of the top college basketball coaches in the country today is Yanni Hufnagel. Hufnagel is a graduate of Cornell University and today is a member of the University of Nevada basketball team coaching staff. Hufnagel is a rare coaching talent that never played competitive basketball past middle school. While he did not have a lot of experience playing, his intuition for the game and ability to relate to players has made him a very valuable commodity.

Hufnagel gained his first experience in basketball while he was still in school. During one summer, he was able to get a great internship working of the New Jersey Nets. At this time he decided that he wanted to pursue a career in basketball. After graduating from college, and spending a few years working as a graduate assistance at the University of Oklahoma, Hufnagel was given a great opportunity to be on the recruiting staff for Harvard University. While he was there, Hufnagel was able to build the best recruiting classes in school history. The teams that he built then went on to win a couple conference championships and advance to the NCAA tournament.

After spending a few years at Harvard, Hufnagel moved on the University of Nevada. Since arriving at Nevada, Hufnagel has helped to improve the team greatly. Since arriving, the team has been one of the best in their conference and has regularly been ranked among the top 25 teams.
