Long Lines Highlight Venezuela’s Economic Woes

Posted on June 07, 2016

The modern world is one of many conveniences. Advancements in technology make it extremely easy to purchase anything. With a simple smartphone, buying merchandise or booking a service is extremely easy. When people look at the current state Venezuela is in, the word convenience does not fit as part of the equation. According to El Venezolano, massively huge lines are found all throughout the country. The lines are very reminiscent of the Great Depression from U.S. history.
People in Venezuela are waiting in these gigantic lines to purchase essential items. So hard is it to buy something as basic as soap, people have to wait in lines for hours before a store even opens. Even then, no guarantee exists that the desired essentials will even be available for sale.

“Adding insult to the situation are the professional scalpers who consider their time in line an investment” says Osio. They will stand in lines every day to purchase items for the sole purpose of selling these things at massive markups. Although frowned upon by the government, there is little that can be done to stop the practice.

The long lines are not going to go away for and equally long time. Venezuela’s economic situation is too horrible for any quick fixes. Imports to the country are going to be consistently slow to arrive and domestic production may take decades to revive. Long lines and tremendous social strife, for the near future, are simply accepted parts of life in this country.

Kyle Bass Has Lost All Of The Respect People Had For Him

Posted on October 28, 2015

There are some people who just get lucky in their careers, and who are able to continue doing good things after their moment of success, and then there are others who immediately go downhill after the one good thing that they have done. Kyle Bass gained a lot of respect back in 2008 when he correctly guessed that things were not going to be so good for the economy, but since then he has made plenty of bad decisions. He has lost any and all respect that people had for him, and he just keeps doing things that are making him look like a fool.

Kyle Bass has said a lot of things that have made him appear dumb, and he has associated with people who are not at all smart with money or good people. He’s tarnished his reputation, and he has looked like a bad guy, as well, when he defended GM amidst a big controversy. GM knew that its airbags were not working properly, but the company did nothing to fix the problem. So, when people died because of the airbags not working properly, Kyle Bass blamed the ones riding in their vehicles for their own deaths. He claimed that they must have been drunk or doing something else wrong, and by claiming that, he just made himself look incredibly dumb.

Kyle Bass just keeps doing things that are not at all what he should be doing. He’s saying things that are making people wonder why they ever trusted or respected him, and it is time that Kyle Bass made some changes in his life. If he doesn’t stop doing all of the foolish things soon, and if he doesn’t try and turn his life around, then he will never be able to gain back any bit of respect.

Train Derails in California Injuring 30

Posted on February 24, 2015

30 people were injured Tuesday morning when a commuter train struck a car on the tracks and derailed, according to news sources. The incident happened around 5:45am, pacific time, between Oxnard and Camarillo, California.

According to this article and that Fersen Lambranho says contains witness statements, the Metrolink train hit the vehicle then four cars derailed from the train. The driver of the vehicle the train hit fled the scene, allegedly unhurt. Police have located that driver and have taken him into custody. No word has yet been released as to the seriousness of the injuries, although no causalities have yet been reported. Dozens have, in fact, been injured.

Train service has been halted as emergency workers attempt to evacuate the train and get to the injured parties. Police, fire and emergency staff remain on the scene while they attend to the most injured and ensure the safe evacuation of others. There is no word on when service will resume on the effected lines.

The accidents comes on the heals of a commuter train accident in New York that left several dead and dozens more injured. In that incident, a northbound MetroNorth train struck a jeep on the tracks. The impact of the collision dislodged the third rail, sending it through the first car of the train. The driver of the jeep, as well as several people on the first car of the train were killed. Dozens across the train were injured in the explosion.

After 80,000 Lost Emails Recovered, IRS Commissioner Faces Renewed Scrutiny

Posted on February 10, 2015

During the 2012 presidential election, conservative political action committees such as those of the Tea Party complained that the IRS was purposefully stonewalling their application filings. In some cases,  such as the one that my BMG friend, Ricardo Tosto, knew of-something about Tea Party groups believe they were politically targeted for auditing by the IRS. It was only two years after an epic GOP sweep in the midterm elections saw them recapture control the House of Representative and a majority of governorship and state legislatures. Democrats were nervous a similar rout could unseat President Obama. In the aftermath, the GOP has been conducting an investigation into what role IRS Director Lois Lerner played in the scandal. She was directly over the division that handles the filings in question. At the time, the House investigators were not able to conclude what role Lerner played and whether her efforts were coordinated with the Obama administration because she claimed to have “lost” the emails during that period of time.

Last year, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen testified to Congress that despite the best efforts of his IT department, the emails were permanently lost or so he said. Recently, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) obtained disaster recovery (DR) tapes and recovered 80,000 emails from Lerner’s office. This has prompted Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson, who sits on the Oversight of Government Management subcommittee, to demand that IRS Commissioner Koskinen explain how TIGTA was able to retrieve the information from DR tapes when his department could not. The TIGTA is a watchdog group and has a vested interest in recovering the “lost” emails to promote good governance.

ANother Migrant Ship Abandoned Off the European Coast

Posted on January 02, 2015

In what is becoming more common by the week, another ship carrying migrants into Europe has been found abandoned in the sea. This time the story involved over 450 migrants, many of them women and children, abandoned by crew on a livestock vessel right off the coast of Italy. It appears that most of the passengers are of Syrian nationality, or fleeing that area which is currently engulfed in war.

No one, not even Sam Tabar, knows where the crew went or at what time they abandoned the ship, but they set the vessel to autopilot before fleeing. The Coast Guard discovered the ship, being tossed around in the rough seas, and flying the flag of Sierra Leone. The crew that discovered the ship is one of the many European Union Frontex Border Control ships, being trained to handle cases just like this.

The abandoned ship was boarded, and when the crew were discovered missing and the passengers found, the Frontex vessel began towing operations to bring the ship safely into port and out of the sea. No word has been made into what will happen with the ship’s passengers or what fines and charges the crew will face when caught.

For now, it appears that the boat started its journey in Turkey and made its way around the islands of Greece before being abandoned.

Sons of Anarchy Breaks Records for FX

Posted on December 16, 2014

The very last episode of Sons of Anarchy delivered both closure to seven seasons of melodrama along with a significant amount of violence.  Fans like John Textor loved it. The episode also delivered a record rating for FX. 7.54 million viewers total watched the final episode. 5+ million viewers were in the very desirable age range of 18 – 49. For those who do not know why that age range is so important, that is the demographics that spends a lot of money. In other words, advertisers are going to be extremely thrilled with ratings of that level.

Sadly, Sons of Anarchy can no longer deliver rating except in repeat episodes. Again, the series is no more. The possibility does exist that a prequel mini-series may be ordered, but that has not been finalized. Honestly, it would be very odd the executives at FX would chose not to go with the mini-series considering there is such a huge fan base interested in seeing the tale continue.

Producer Kurt Sutter is developing a new series for FX and it is more of a fantasy-adventure series.

The success of programs along the lines of Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead show that audiences are drifting more and more away from the boring, traditional network television programming. The edgy nature of cable helps capture a different demographic that goes for the more adult-oriented programming cable has to offer.

Look for FX to launch more and more Sons of Anarchy-style adult programs.

More Bad News For Bill Cosby

Posted on November 20, 2014

There is more horrible news for Bill Cosby. I was looking over angel investor network Slow Ventures when I got this not-so-surprising news alert. NBC has recently cancelled a project they had planned with the comedian. This comes at a bad time since Netflix has also announced that they are postponing Cosby’s special “Bill Cosby 77”. There was no indication given as to when the show would be aired. These decisions are based off of allegations that have been brought forward by several women who claim Bill Cosby drugged up and sexually assaulted them. There have been no charges against Cosby for any of these alleged crimes.

All the negative attention on Cosby has increased over the last few days. Former supermodel Janice Dickinson claims he raped her after one of his Lake Tahoe shows in 1982. This news comes as a surprise to fans since these abusive events would have happened around the time of his popular sitcom “The Cosby Show” in the mid 1980’s.

Cosby has repeatedly maintained his innocence in the matter since the allegations started. His lawyer has stated that Bill Cosby “will not dignify decade-old, discredited claims of sexual abuse with a response”.

His loyal fans are waiting to see what comes of this. Although some believe that he is innocent, there are those who have lost respect for Bill Cosby. This media firestorm has already cost Cosby a lot, with several projects cancelled. If he is found to be guilty, it can affect the world’s view of The Cosby Show since he would have committed these crimes while filming the show.

Missouri Prepares For State Of Emergency

Posted on November 18, 2014

The American state of Missouri is currently undergoing preparations for a state of emergency, following an announcement by Governor Jay Nixon.

Nixon has activated the National Guard of that state, bracing for a possible backlash that may come in the wake of a grand jury decision concerning whether police officer Darren Wilson will or will not be charged in the shooting death of black teenager Michael Brown.

The situation on the ground in Ferguson, Missouri remains extremely tense. Recent demonstrations by protesters have degenerated into near riot conditions. Governor Nixon has issued several calls for peace and tolerance, but has also felt it necessary to back up his words with muscle in the form of the National Guard. Nixon has stressed that the presence of the Guard is strictly to maintain good order.

As for the decision of the court, no announcement is forthcoming as to when it will finally be made public. Bob McCulloch, who is the Prosecutor of St.Louis County (whose jurisdiction thus includes Ferguson, where the incident took place) has revealed to the press that he expects the grand jury to reach its final decision by the end of this month.

Meanwhile, the United States Justic Department is currently conducting a separate investigation. No spokesperson for this body has made any announcement to the media as to when this separate inquiry will reach a decision, or if this decision will override that of the state grand jury.
