Jacob Gottlieb is the CIO of Visium Asset Management, a hedge fund focused around healthcare. Gottlied has announced that his company will start “winding down”. The announcement was due to various charges of wrongdoing, including mismarking.

Mismarking occurs when a company, typically a trust fund company, wants to create an illusion of liquidity in their select securities or bonds. This is done to encourage that company’s investors to continue putting their money into the fund.

One notable downside of mismarking is that is causes inflation, typically by several thousands of dollars. In the most extreme cases, mismarking the securities in a given portfolio can lead to inflation by millions of dollars. Companies can also inflate management fees for investors, which means that the investors will lose money.

Jacob Gottlieb’s company no longer has any employees. Since Gottlieb has not been particularly accused of any wrongdoing, he wants to continue working as the CIO for the company until it officially closes. Carlyle Group, a global private equity company, purchased 63.6 percent stake in CVC in 2009. This purchase was worth about $420 million and saw him joined the Forbes list of billionaires when he was declared to have a net worth of $1.1 billion.
